I had the pleasure of covering Alaska’s crazy three-way senate race on election day for the New York Times. The majority of the focus was on Murkowski’s historic write-in campaign and her Tea-Party backed republican challenger Joe Miller. In the end the “write-in” votes lead, but only time will tell how many of those are [...]
Recently I had the pleasure of spending some time with Maggie Nylund, the owner of Magpie’s Bakery in Valdez. Besides the obvious appeal of her tasty baked goods, quiches and soup, she had a very interesting story to tell.
Maggie Nylund opened Magpie’s Bakery in November 2008. Prior to opening the bakery Nylund operated a wholesale [...]
I’ve been in Valdez for the past few days for the Last Frontier Theater Conference. The Anchorage Opera sponsored me to come down and study acting and participate in a new workshop, acting for singers. It’s been humbling working with an amazingly talented group of artists, including Juliana Osinchuk, Nancy Caudill, Kim Estes and Darcy [...]
This past month I have been introduced to a world that I never before knew existed – the world of charity auctions. I’ve seen everything from fast-talking, cowboy-boot wearing auctioneers to nervous high-school choristers singing to a room full of tuxes. And the events themselves have raised anywhere from $20,000 to $500,000.

A few from the ceremonial start of the 2010 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. My experience this year was cut short by a little problem with some red tape, but I still managed to have fun and make a few pictures that I am happy with.
One of the great things about living in Anchorage has to be the people. Not just the normal people who drink Starbucks and shop at Costco, but the crazy people who like to race outhouses and run with a herd of reindeer down 4th avenue. Sure, Fur Rondy has the snow sculpture competition and the [...]
This month Alaska Magazine picked up one of my photos of kite-skiers on Portage Lake. There’s something truly wonderful about launching off of a completely flat surface and flying 20+ feet in the air. Maybe this season I’ll get off the ground too. They were taken last valentine’s day.
The Berth Project was a large and diverse public art project in downtown Anchorage. I documented one of the artists on her daily “commute” to and from work. She blogged about her experience, and it’s an interesting read.
